Golden Demon 1988: Vignette (Diorama) Category,

Golden Demon 1988: Vignette (Diorama) Category.

Hi guys, today I am going to share the results of 1988's Golden Demon , Vignette category with you. Thats the Diorama category to you new lot!
Anyway, lets begin.

We start off with two honourable mentions,

Honourable mention 1: Dreadnought by J.S. Wildern

Well, its a space marine dreadnought, but look, the pilots alive! this is obviously rogue trader days! I like the amount of detail he's got in a small space. I like this piece.

Honourable Mention 2: Eldar Versus Imperial Guard(I think) by David Chauvel.

So i think thats an imperial guardsman there, fighting off some eldar. he appears to be using an autogun with a bent barrel! watch out!

3rd Place: "Orks in a Hut" by Ivan Bartleet.

So here we have the third place piece. I myself think both of the Honourable mentions are better than this piece, but i am not the judge so its not up to me! I struggle to actually see the orks in the hut....

2nd place: "Eldar Walkers" by Paul Bensen.

Now this is a nice piece, Harlequin War walkers and wraithlord, sorry Dreadnought. Gotta give that freehand work credit!

1st Place: "Space Marine Attack Bike" by Callum Macdonald.

Oh look, its a space marine piece in first place! I dont think this is anywhere near as good as the 2nd place eldar piece myself. Are those marines errant? Or nova marines?

So there you have it, do you agree with the standings? how would you place them?

Golden Demon 1988: Dragon Category.

Golden Demon 1988: Dragon Category.

Hi guys, so we know we are all fans of seeing all the retro Golden demon goodness, click HERE to see our previous rundown on the "Single miniatures conversion category" and HERE to see our post on "Scratch built and converted vehicles category"

Well today its the "Dragon" category. Awesome. I love dragons and who wouldnt? Epic flying lizards breathing fire and roasting neer do wells to a cinder!

Anyway lets get on with the rundown.

#3 Graham Apperley's Dragon with Elf rider.

Inspiring Posing.

This things amazing, and look at its pose, it looks a LOT like the current high elf dragon kit the way its perched on that rock!

Pose inspired by bronze dragon category 1988 winner.

Hang on a minute, look at the lance, look at the shield... Its the EXACT same pose! Wow Games workshop we know where you get your ideas! i hope yoiu credited Graham Apperley for that one!

#2 Brian Moores "Dwarf Killer"

Whats all that dead stuff on the base?

Well i say "Dwarf Killer" as i think thats what the dead guys are on the base, but i could be wrong. In my opinion, this dragon is not as good as Grahams above in third place, but you know how the GW judges are!
I like the Flame effect coming from the mouth, and has it been "speared"? i think it has. Interesting.

#1 David Chauvels "Plague Dragon"

The clear winner.

Now, before i go and look at GW's website, i am wondering has this one inspired the current kit like the dragon in third position? Lets go and have a look.

Plaguerism? i dont think so.

Ummm, well its kinda close, but i think thats more down to the subject matter itself rather than exact pose. I have to say, i do like the "eccentric" basing of the 80's era painters. everything is very high fantasy indeed!
I think i would agree this is the best, followed by Grahams elf dragon in second, and lastly the Brians Dwarf killer.

Do you agree with the placings? how would you place them?

Golden Demon 1988: Single Conversion Category.

Golden Demon 1988: Single Conversion Category.

Hi guys, after the success of the last retro Golden Demon post Here (The Vehicle conversion and scratchbuilt category) I thought i would show you some more.

This evening i will be showing you the "Single Conversion Category" To be honest i think this just means Single miniature conversion.

Anyway here we go!

#Honourary Mention: Adrian Seller's Eldar Dreadnought (Now referred to as a WraithLord?)

Adrian Sellers Wraithlord.

Wow what a beast, i think this might be a harlequin version! look at that freehand, and who is he supposed to be? Fred Estare??

#3  "Mauron The Green" by Mark Delicata.

Tiny skeletal familiars or massive dragon?

I'm not sure what the hell this thing is myself, its a large dragon with a couple of skeletal familiars reading a spell or something. Its interesting if anything...

#2 Daniek Nazer's Beastman?

Chaos Beastman, i think.

I'm convinced this is a Beastman, although, i could be wring! knowing GW in the 80's this could easily be a space marine. Really. I like the work on the base and the banner, the actual model itself however i think the details are not all that well defined!

And Finally #1 Paul Bensens Genestealer hybrid with Telescopic legs?

WTF is going on in this picture?

Hmm, what the hell is going on here?maybe its the lighting but i really struggle to see what i am supposed to be looking at! It looks like a Genestealer Hybrid head, with a Space Marine Jump Pack, with some kind of multi telescopic leg arrangement... Oh and a nicely painted Freehand Banner.

So thats it for GD88's Single Conversion category.

Do you agree with the order of the finalists? Personally i think third position should have won! I love that dragon!
